MODULE
9: REGIONAL ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL APPROACHES TO DESERTIFICATION
Module Leader:
Prof. S. Openshaw (University of Leeds)
Topic
9.1 GIS-based socio-economic modelling at regional scale (Openshaw,
University of Leeds)
- To add a socio-economic component to
the MEDALUS models. To develop models of socio-economic
spatial data series for the northern Mediterranean. To
develop neuro-computing based methods able to link
socio-economic and physical models. To demonstrate their
usefulness via one or more case studies.

Topic
9.2 Economic assessment of watershed restoration actions (Rojo
Serrano, ICONA, Madrid)
- To study the effects of watershed
restoration actions, by using one of the commercially
available semi-distributed hydrological models which
captures the relationships between the specific actions
and the effects induced by them. To perform a proper
economic assessment of the damage and losses avoided by
the watershed restoration actions (valuation of
externalities) and of the investment and maintenance
costs associated with those actions. To use this model
for investment analysis and to allocate investments
optimally both in time and space. To provide a
methodology which can be applied to different regions in
the Mediterranean basin depending on the availability of
data.
Topic
9.3 Regional economic and social approaches to desertification (López-Bermúdez, University of Murcia)
- Objectives included examination of the
following factors: present and foreseeable trends on
demographic variables; land use structure and trends;
abandonment of lands and socio-economic causes;
agricultural production; price-forming processes.
