MODULE
8: REGIONAL PHYSICAL INDICATORS OF DESERTIFICATION
Module Leader: Dr.
S. Sommer ( JRC, Ispra)
Topic
8.1 Theoretically relevant indicators at the regional scale (Kirkby,
University of Leeds)
- Development of a 1-dimensional cell
model to provide regional indicators. Integration with
remote sensing studies. Application to test areas, in
collaboration with remote sensing groups. Calibration and
validation of model.
Topic
8.2 Regional desertification indicators (Sommer,
JRC. Ispra)
- Thematic and methodological
optimisation of spectral mixture analysis (SMA) for its
application to the retrieval of regional desertification
indicators from multispectral earth observation satellite
data. Application of optimised SMA to time series (15 to
20 years) of high resolution satellite data (MSS, TM,
SPOT optional) over MEDALUS test sites. Definition and
preparation of a multitemporal set of change maps based
upon satellite derived parameters (time series)
describing soil status and vegetation abundance at
regional scale. Evaluation of satellite time series
analyses and change maps towards the definition of
desertification indicators through comparison and
inter-calibration with model simulations and regional
index concepts to be provided by modelling partners from
other dedicated MEDALUS topics. Definition of interface
to provide direct input of remotely sensed dynamic
parameters into models and/or for the validation of
simulation studies at a regional scale.
Set-up and maintenance of a joint MEDALUS III, Regional
Indicators Project data server for the full life-time of
MEDALUS.
Topic
8.3 The use of METEOSAT for regional scale indicators (Corte-Real,
University of Lisbon)
- Study precipitation variability over
Mediterranean based on METEOSAT's derived ESOC
precipitation index. Characterise surface effects from
relationships between METEOSAT'S derived albedo and
surface temperature. Identify target areas especially
sensitive towards desertification, through the use of
regional indicators.
