12.1 Empirical evidence for the impact of human activities and
climate on headwater channel changes (Poesen,
University of Leuven)
- To increase understanding of gully
types, gully initiation, gully development and infilling
of gullies in Mediterranean environments. To collect
field data for this purpose and for incorporation to the
model of headwater channel behaviour. To assess the
contribution of gully erosion to total sediment output
from rural catchments under different Mediterranean
environments. To develop strategies in order to prevent
the initiation and the further development of gullies in
Mediterranean environments.

12.2 Gully characteristics and modelling (Kirkby,
University of Leeds)
- To develop a two-dimensional
simulation for badland systems. To create a theoretical
bifurcation model of gully stability. To analyse the
factors influencing gully head location and drainage
density.

12.3 Lithological control of runoff and sediment production (Puigdefábregas,
CSIC, Almeria)
- To analyse the correlation structure
between characteristics of gully systems and their
functional response in terms of morphological change and
outputs. To develop methods for assessing off site
effects and their sensitivity to external forcing. To
evaluate the specific effects of lithology. To provide a
set of documented case studies of palaeo-responses to
natural and man made historical events in the systems.

12.4 Gully development along a climatological gradient, Israel (Lavee,
Bar-Ilan University)
- Erosion is a dominant phenomena along
the climatic gradient of the Judean Desert. A wide range
of features, such as scars, steep slopes and gullies
provide evidence for past and present erosion processes.
The objective was to examine current process rates,
especially gully development. Aerial photographs were
used because there has been significant gully development
over the last 50 years along the climatic gradient.
